Commissioned through the North East Emerging Artist Award, The Vanbrugh Perspective is a developing body of work created in response to Seaton Delaval Hall, one of Sir John Vanbrugh’s most distinctive buildings.

Although developed independently from The Constant State, the project is rooted in the same fascination with architecture as a vessel for memory, imagination and discovery. Rather than treating the Hall as a fixed historical monument, it approaches the building as an active site of interpretation, where documented history and speculative reconstruction exist side by side.

Drawing on painting, sculpture and installation, the work explores how architectural fragments, perspectives and material traces can generate new readings of familiar places. Fiction is used not to replace history, but to create space for alternative ways of seeing.

Architecture has shaped my practice long before I became an artist. Following more than a decade working in architectural practice, drawing, model making and spatial thinking remain central to the way I develop ideas. The Vanbrugh Perspective brings those interests into direct conversation with one of Britain’s most significant Baroque buildings.

Supported through the North East Emerging Artist Award, the project provides the opportunity to develop an ambitious new body of work over an extended period, culminating in an exhibition at Seaton Delaval Hall.

Rather than reconstructing the Hall’s past, the work asks how architecture can continue to generate new stories, new perspectives and new ways of understanding place.
